Key Events Every Trader Must Know
NFP — Non-Farm Payrolls
High Impact USDReleased first Friday of each month at 8:30 AM EST by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Measures net change in US employment excluding farming. One of the most market-moving events in Forex — often moves EUR/USD 50-150 pips on release. A strong NFP (above forecast) is typically USD bullish.
CPI — Consumer Price Index
High Impact USD/EUR/GBPMeasures inflation by tracking the price change of a basket of consumer goods. Watched closely by central banks to set interest rate policy. Higher-than-expected CPI typically signals hawkish central bank policy — bullish for that currency.
FOMC — Federal Reserve Meeting
High Impact USDThe Federal Open Market Committee meets 8 times per year to set US interest rates. Rate hike decisions cause major USD movements. The accompanying statement and press conference often moves markets more than the rate decision itself.
GDP — Gross Domestic Product
High Impact All MajorsQuarterly measure of total economic output. Strong GDP growth signals economic health and is typically positive for the domestic currency. GDP revision data can also move markets significantly.
PMI — Purchasing Managers Index
Medium-High Impact All MajorsMonthly survey of purchasing managers in manufacturing and services sectors. A reading above 50 indicates expansion; below 50 indicates contraction. Often a leading indicator for GDP and currency direction.
How to Trade the Economic Calendar
Review the Week Ahead
Every Sunday, check the week's high-impact events. Mark FOMC, NFP, and central bank meetings. These are the days when volatility is highest.
Analyze Prior Trends
Look at the last 3-6 releases of an event. Is the data trending better or worse? Markets often price in the trend, not just the headline number.
Manage Risk Around Events
Widen your stop-loss or reduce position size before high-impact releases. Spreads widen during events — factor this into your entries and exits.
Trade the Reaction, Not the Number
Often the initial spike reverses. Wait for the price to establish a direction (15-30 seconds post-release) before entering — avoid the initial whipsaw.
